Nature's Solution to Acne-Prone Skin

What is Acne?

ACNE is commonly called pimples. It's the red spot or pus bump which we see in the oily areas of our face, back and chest.

How is Acne formed?

Acne is formed when three conditions exist, namely:

  1. Oily Skin;
  2. Plugged Skin Pores; and
  3. Bacterial Attack.

Acne starts when the skin's oil glands produce more oil than usual. Too much oil plus dead surface skin cells result to clogging of pores, forming blackheads (open comedo) and whiteheads (closed comedo). The mixture of hardened oil and skin debris becomes food for acne bacteria. With bacterial infection, red spots, white pus bumps or cystic lumps appear, which are the signs of pimples.

Is Acne just for teenagers?

Acne is most widespread among teens because their oil glands act like over-productive "oil wells." However, many adults in their 20's, 30'ss, 40's and even beyond are also known to have acne break outs. Some women experiencing hormonal changes get break outs, usually during or near their menstrual period, and during pregnancy. Other factors that may cause eruptions are intense emotion, stress and sleeping late.

What else can cause Acne?

The following are also possible acne triggers:

  1. Oral Contraceptives - Especially those containing androgen-like substances.
  2. Drugs with Steroids - Like anti-inflammatory (corticosteroids) and muscle builders (anabolic steroids).
  3. Cooking Oil - Not as food, but as contributor to skin greasiness while cooking.
  4. Baby Oil & Petroleum Jelly - Are well known as comedogenic (acne-causing) to some people.
  5. Heat & Humidity - Can cause increased perspiration, which may clog your pores.
  6. Cosmetics & Personal Care Products - If your pimples occur around your mouth and chin, check your toothpaste, mouthwash, or lip gloss. Pimples around the hairline or on the scalp can be caused by oily conditioner or other oily hair preparations. It can take months to clog pores. So, don't limit possible acne triggers to the latest products you are using when pimples break out.

What doesn't cause Acne?

There are some persistent myths about pimples that need to be corrected. Pimples are not caused by the following:

  1. Reduces Skin Oiliness - With licochalcone, an anti-acne ingredient found in GODIVA Licorice.
  2. Sexual Activity - This myth persists because of the association between acne and surging sexual drive during adolescence. No, sexual behavior has nothing to do with pimples.
  3. Dirt & Pollution - Fact is, acne isn't caused by dirt. Washing more than 3X a day may even prove harmful as this can dry and irritate skin.
  4. Dirty Blood - In the first place, there is no such thing as "dirty blood."
